hot july moon, summer of 99

twisted the warm water
out of my tangled hair
threw my head back,
and giggled at Carrie
as we danced in the spinklers
those sultry, texas nights

our tiny bikinis covered
everything,
and nothing

my insides hiccupped
but, still
I pretended he wasn’t cruising by,
cold beer in the back,
one-pump gas-station town
Friday nights

he idled at the corner
and we skipped back inside

he’d be back tomorrow

maybe then,
I’d go for a drive

  1. i seriously wish my best friend and i had done this like we always said we would. so glad you wrote about this, lauren. but seriously, don't get in a stranger's car that what they always taught me. even though rules are meant to be broken sometimes.

    1. i normally don't like to add on any sort of explanation, so the reader can take it where they want, but, he wasn't a stranger. i was just shy. he became my hs sweetheart once i got up the nerve to go for that ride.

    2. i agree with you about own interpretation and letting the reader take it as they want - i was just kidding about strangers. that's actually a romantic story knowing the background.

  2. I really liked that, Lauren. I, too, like the idea of being a little vague so as to leave room for imagination. You're a wonderful poet.

  3. I personally like that you don't add explanation...adds more mystery to it and gives it a better feel. That's what's so beautiful about poetry in general...the subjectivity of the reader's interpretation.

  5. Those last lines bring back so many memories of us driving to nowhere, just the two of us.

  6. Randomness is the best part. Carefree. I feel I get stuck in that feeling forever.
